This house was built downhill of a slope and was taking massive amounts of water in the backyard. A common area above the property line presented a challenge: it was all wooded, so options were limited. We recommended a diversion dyke of some kind above the rear fence to divert water. The right side of the house needed more dirt, so we planned to import soil for diversion and minor grading.
We researched the best options for a diversion dyke in this area. We needed something that could be easily installed in the wooded area without disrupting the forest. Any kind of grading or excavation would also have been costly, due to limited access and difficulties navigating between trees. We proposed using a Filtrexx® system to divert water from the slope runoff around the backyard.
The Filtrexx® Siltsoxx™ product was the perfect solution for this area. It is designed for quick, easy installation at a lower cost than more labor-intensive trenching or grading. Siltsoxx™ is highly effective, with optimal filtering and less maintenance compared to other silt fence options. This product is made in the USA and can be installed any time of year, even on frozen ground. We estimated we would need approximately 95 feet of Siltsoxx™ to best address the problem.
We were able to install the Filtrexx® Siltsoxx™ in just one day. This allowed us more time to look for utilities and begin cutting the swale on the right side of the house. We always carefully locate utilities before we dig, and with 811, we contact all of the appropriate service providers to mark their lines. Once the utilities were located and marked, we began importing approximately 14 cubic yards of screened topsoil. We finely graded the area to create a diversion swale and improve water flow toward the street. To finish the project, we seeded and strawed all the disturbed areas.
