At Reynolds Contracting, our earthwork services go beyond the surface—literally. We recently completed a pipe replacement in Central Virginia that showcases the expertise and precision required for quality pipe work in roadway applications.
This project involved replacing a deteriorated corrugated metal pipe (CMP) that had become ineffective due to age and weathering. Our team mobilized to the site and began by uncovering the upper end of the pipe, which was completely buried. We removed three poplar trees that were obstructing access on the downhill side and began grading a temporary road to ensure neighborhood traffic could continue safely during construction.
One of the early priorities was locating the existing phone line in three separate locations to prevent any disruptions. Once clear, our crew removed the old pipe and began installation of a new 30-inch double-walled plastic pipe across the roadway. We backfilled beneath the pipe using flowable fill for stability and used 21A stone in compacted lifts to fill the remaining trench. Each lift was carefully tamped to ensure long-term durability.
Weather delays didn’t slow our momentum. After a rainy day following the flowable fill pour, we quickly resumed work, bridging over the fill and continuing with backfill. A trench roller helped us compact the upper layers of stone efficiently.
Final touches included fine grading of the road surface and shoulders, seamlessly blending the repaired section into the surrounding terrain. We added riprap around the pipe outlet for erosion control, and seeded and strawed all disturbed areas to promote vegetation and restore the site.
Throughout the process, we maintained a passable roadway to minimize inconvenience for residents—an important part of our commitment to thoughtful, community-focused construction.
