Air knife excavation is a safe way to remove soil and rocks from anything potentially fragile underground. Using pressurized air, we gently break up soil and rocks around roots, utilities, and other obstacles. Here, we cleared dirt and rock away from a tree’s root system in order to place a pipe underneath the roots. If we dug through these roots, the tree would suffer, or maybe die, with such great damage to its roots. With the precision of the air knife, we can dig exactly where we need to, without unnecessary damage or destruction.
In a variety of applications, air knife excavation is very powerful. We can dig deeply, making small trenches without the use of big, heavy equipment. The air knife tool is simply attached to a towable, high-volume air compressor. Excavators and backhoes work quickly but can’t navigate around obstacles as easily or dig as narrowly as the air knife. Hand-digging with a shovel is another useful option in some cases, but can be very labor intensive while possibly not as powerful or precise as the air knife.
