On a recent project, we addressed poor water runoff along a residential street using innovative drainage solutions in the Charlottesville area.
A homeowner contacted us after his basement flooded. At our initial site visit, we learned the flood was caused by water runoff from a rear access road behind the house. The road had not been properly maintained, which resulted in poor waterflow and drainage. The drainage systems in place were completely overloaded, and all water runoff was directed into one backyard. The basement stairwell had flooded with 4 feet of water against the basement door.
To avoid this disaster repeating in the future, we proposed a concrete diversion at the rear access road. We began by removing the existing asphalt at the rear fence gate and disposed of the waste off-site. With the old material out of the way, we excavated for the new subgrade, planning for better drainage and improved water management for this property and the neighboring houses along the access road. Then we installed concrete forms to begin the next stage of the project.
The ultimate goal in this project was to install a concrete bump across the back fence access gate to the property, creating a water diversion. This structure essentially looks like a huge speedbump – not to slow drivers down, but to steer water away from the entrance to the property. With the concrete poured, we trowel-finished the top surface and removed the forms. We finely graded the access roadway in front of the gate to channel water beyond the gate entrance. Farther down the access road, a natural berm will now catch and direct water properly.
