Preventative excavating work

At Reynolds Contracting, we often categorize our work into two types: preventative and corrective.  We really enjoy preventative excavating work because our clients are thinking ahead to avoid potential foundation damage to their homes.  So many, many times, we see how major problems could have been prevented if we had only been called sooner.  In many cases, the preventative work costs significantly less than the corrective work.  This is especially the case in drainage around your foundation.

The majority of our foundation repairs could have been prevented if water had been property directed away from the home.  Here, we are replacing a downspout drain that directs water away from the corner of this house.

The original downspout drain had been made of black, corrugated pipe, which had been crushed and was full of dirt and roots.  Not an ideal drainage system!  We replaced the damaged pipe with PVC sewer pipe to last for many years.  Now the water will flow away from the house much better, protecting the foundation.

This job posed some interesting and intricate challenges.  The existing downspout was extending into the yard through a stone wall – a good idea from the get-go to get the water through the wall and away from the house!  There were quite a few other utilities running perpendicular to the pipe ditch.  We always contact Virginia Utility Protection Service (VUPS) or Miss Utility of Virginia before digging to make sure your utilities are marked and your property is safe to excavate.  We were able to thread the new PVC sewer pipe under the crossing utility lines, leaving them undisturbed and fully functional from beginning to end of the job.

Preventative excavating work also includes knowing where your utilities are and how to miss them.
