On a recent project, our team completed the first phase of a two-part upgrade for an A-frame home in Central Virginia. The homeowner needed improved structural support along the perimeter of the building, especially on the low-clearance side where the roofline sits close to the ground. This type of structure often benefits from an exterior skirt wall, a short wall built around the base of the home to enclose the crawlspace, protect utilities, and provide an additional layer of insulation and weatherproofing. Before that wall can be built, however, it requires a solid, well-engineered footing.
Our proposal included installing 8″ x 18″ concrete footings along 104 linear feet under the eaves. Crews hand-excavated a trench around the perimeter, which was no small task given the tight working space, tree stumps, and substantial root systems. Once excavated, we poured concrete with reinforcing bars for long-term strength and durability. We also inset ½” anchor bolts at 4-foot spacing, preparing the area for the future skirt wall installation.
This project is a great example of the possibility of phasing. By completing the skirt wall footers now, the homeowner can move on to Phase 2 with the installation of the skirt wall whenever the time is right. Breaking projects into phases is a great way to spread out costs without sacrificing quality or structural integrity. We’re happy to work with clients to break projects into multiple phases for better timing, budgeting purposes, or other considerations.
A properly built skirt wall is especially important for an A-frame. With such steep rooflines and minimal foundation height on one side, managing moisture and protecting the crawlspace becomes essential. Our team brings decades of experience in concrete work, drainage considerations, and foundation support, ensuring each phase of the project is built to last.
